Life in Mumbai During Record-Breaking Rains

Mumbai has been experiencing very heavy rainfall for the past few days, leading to disruptions and a state of high alert.

Here's a summary of the recent rainfall situation:

  • Torrential Downpour: Mumbai received over 800 millimeters of rainfall in the four days leading up to Tuesday, August 19, 2025. Several parts of the city recorded over 300 mm between Monday and Tuesday morning alone.
  • Widespread Impact: The heavy rainfall has caused widespread waterlogging, disrupting local train services, affecting flight operations, and causing traffic jams. Schools and colleges have been closed for safety reasons. There have also been reports of fatalities and evacuations due to rain-related incidents.
  • Specific Rainfall Readings (Past 24 hours as of Tuesday morning):
    • Santacruz station logged 223 mm.
    • Colaba station received 110 mm.
    • Some areas, particularly the suburbs, received even higher rainfall, including 369 mm in Chincholi, 337 mm in Kandivali, and 305 mm in Dindoshi.
  • Causes: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) attributed the heavy rainfall to a combination of weather systems including a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, a depression over south coastal Odisha, an upper air cyclonic circulation over the north-east Arabian Sea, and an offshore trough along the Gujarat and Kerala coast.
  • Forecast: While the red alert was expected to end by Wednesday morning (August 20th, 2025), heavy to very heavy rainfall was forecasted to continue until at least Friday, with an orange alert issued for Thursday and a yellow alert for Friday in the Konkan region districts.
  • Historical Context: This August has been the wettest in Mumbai in the past five years. For reference, in August 2020, the Santacruz station received 1,240 mm of rain. August is typically the second-wettest month in Mumbai, with average rainfall ranging from 560-620 mm.
